These equations estimate GFR from creatinine. Muscle mass, diet, extra creatinine secretion, and lab methods all move the number. Direct GFR (inulin clearance) is impractical for everyday care, so eGFR is the usual screen — not a diagnosis, and not a reason to change medicines on your own.

A BSA-adjusted GFR around 100–130 mL/min/1.73 m² in men and 90–120 in women under 40 is often quoted as the usual range. After 40 the mean falls with age.

A GFR above 60 is usually adequate on its own. CKD1 and CKD2 still need other evidence of kidney damage. This page cannot see that evidence, so the badge for 90+ is labeled “Normal or CKD1.”

MDRD is 89.3, CKD-EPI 99.2, and Mayo 120.3 mL/min/1.73 m². The CKD-EPI figure sits in the 90+ band. The same creatinine as 79.56 µmol/L gives the same three numbers.

MDRD is 66.3, CKD-EPI 74.8, and Mayo 98.0 mL/min/1.73 m². CKD-EPI lands in the CKD2 (mild) GFR range; that stage still needs other signs of kidney damage before it is a diagnosis.

Child default: 0.9 mg/dL, 110 cm

Schwartz is 50.5 mL/min/1.73 m². 43.3 inches is the same height to one decimal. Adult CKD bands are not applied on the Children tab.

Frequently asked questions

What is GFR?
Glomerular filtration rate is how quickly the kidneys filter fluid. A higher GFR generally means better kidney function; a meaningful drop means less fluid is being cleared in the same time. Labs usually report an estimated GFR (eGFR) indexed to 1.73 m² of body surface area, not a measured inulin clearance.
Which formula should I use?
For adults this page shows three estimates that calculator.net publishes side by side. CKD-EPI (2009) is the headline figure most labs still quote. MDRD is an older four-variable study equation. Mayo quadratic was built to behave better at higher GFR. For children, only bedside Schwartz (CKiD) is used: 0.413 × height in cm ÷ serum creatinine.
What is a typical GFR?
Under age 40, a BSA-adjusted GFR around 100–130 mL/min/1.73 m² in men and 90–120 in women is often described as the usual range. After 40, the population mean falls with age (about 116 in the 20s down to about 75 after 70). Your number is an estimate from creatinine, not a personal “normal.”
Does a GFR above 60 mean my kidneys are fine?
A GFR above 60 mL/min/1.73 m² is usually adequate by itself and is not enough to diagnose chronic kidney disease. CKD1 and CKD2 also need evidence of kidney damage, such as protein in the urine. A clear drop from a previous test still deserves a conversation with a clinician, even if the new value sits above 60.

That factor is a population adjustment from those studies, not a statement about you. Newer 2021 CKD-EPI equations do not use race; this calculator stays with the three formulas on the source page.
