Heat index is the “feels like” temperature from air temperature plus humidity. Enter a dry-bulb temperature in °F, °C, or Kelvin and either relative humidity or dew point to see the National Weather Service estimate and a Caution through Extreme danger category.

Formula

Air temperature is converted to Fahrenheit (conversion.js). Relative humidity is used as a percent. If you enter dew point instead, humidity is

RH% = 100 × exp( 17.27 Td / (Td + 237.7) − 17.27 T / (T + 237.7) )

with T and Td in Celsius. Then the NWS heat index (°F) is:

Dry air (RH under 13% and T between 80 and 112°F) subtracts ((13 − RH) / 4) × √((17 − |T − 95|) / 17). Very humid air (RH above 85% and T between 80 and 87°F) adds ((RH − 85) / 10) × ((87 − T) / 5). Displayed °C and K are converted from the unrounded Fahrenheit heat index (not from the already-rounded °F), then rounded to whole degrees.

Dew point instead of humidity

The same 85°F air with a 70°F dew point is about 61% humidity, so the heat index is 90°F (32°C or 305K) — still Caution, because the unrounded value sits just under 90°F.

Frequently asked questions

What is heat index?
Heat index (sometimes called humiture) is the temperature it feels like when humidity is factored in with the air temperature. Sweat cools you by evaporating; moist air slows that evaporation, so the same reading on a thermometer can feel much hotter on a humid day.
How is heat index calculated?
This calculator uses the U.S. National Weather Service Rothfusz regression: a simple Steadman formula when the air temperature is below 80°F, and the nine-term polynomial (with published dry-air and high-humidity adjustments) otherwise. Enter relative humidity, or a dew point — dew point is converted to humidity with the August–Roche–Magnus formula (constants 17.27 / 237.7). Results are rounded to a whole degree.
When is the heat index formula valid?
The NWS equation is meant for air temperatures of 80°F (27°C) or higher and relative humidity of about 40% or more, in shade with a light wind. This tool still reports a number outside that window (using the simple formula when air temperature is under 80°F) so you can see the math, but treat those readings as a rough guide.
What do Caution, Extreme caution, Danger, and Extreme danger mean?
They follow the Wikipedia ranges printed on calculator.net: 80–90°F is Caution (fatigue and heat cramps possible), 90–105°F Extreme caution (heat exhaustion possible), 105–130°F Danger (heat stroke probable with continued activity), and over 130°F Extreme danger (heat stroke imminent). Categories use the unrounded Fahrenheit heat index.
Does sunshine change the heat index?
The NWS heat index assumes shade. Direct sun can make it feel up to about 14°F hotter. Children, older adults, and people with heart disease, diabetes, or obesity are at higher risk of heat illness — rest and hydrate before thirst hits.
