Why area factors must be squared
A meter is about 3.28084 feet, but a square meter is about 10.7639 square feet. Both dimensions change units, so using a length factor once will understate the area. Square centimeters and square millimeters likewise differ by a factor of 100, not 10.
Acres, hectares, and cents
An international acre is exactly 43,560 square feet. A hectare is 10,000 square meters, and an are is 100 square meters. The land unit cent means one hundredth of an acre, giving 435.6 square feet or 40.468564224 square meters. It is unrelated to currency cents.
Conversions use international feet and acres. Historical surveying units and local parcel measurement rules can differ. A change of units does not establish a boundary, usable floor area, or ownership. To turn an area into a volume, you also need depth; use the Cubic Yard Calculator.

A quarter-acre lot
0.25 acre is 10,890 ft², or 1,011.7141056 m².
A room in metric units
100 ft² is exactly 9.290304 m². This is an area conversion; no waste allowance has been added.
