Estimate the quantity of boxed flooring to buy, including your waste allowance, full-box rounding and optional installation costs.
Start with a room or measured floor area
For a rectangular room, enter length and width in one common dimension unit. For an L-shaped space or several rooms using the same product, divide the floor into non-overlapping rectangles and enter one length, width pair per line under Multiple rooms. Use Known area when a plan or the Area Calculator already gives a measured area for a more complex shape.
Select the area unit used on the flooring box and price quote. The calculator converts room dimensions into that unit. Box coverage, excluded area and per-area prices must be entered in the selected area unit; changing the selection does not automatically convert those entries. Subtract excluded fixed areas once, before adding waste.
Waste and whole boxes are separate allowances
Waste covers cuts, damage and the layout you expect. The default 10% is only an example; choose an allowance with the product instructions or installer. Complex patterns and narrow sections may need a different amount. The tool then rounds the required area up to complete boxes, which can add further surplus.
Use the coverage printed on the carton, rather than multiplying a plank's nominal dimensions when usable coverage differs. All room rows are treated as one order of the same product and can share spare material. Calculate different products separately. This tool estimates quantities; it does not generate a cutting or seam layout. Use the Tile Calculator when tile size and grout spacing are part of the problem.
Read the cost estimate
Choose price per box or price per selected area unit. Material cost uses the full coverage purchased in whole boxes. Labor uses the net installed floor area, without charging extra labor for waste or unopened surplus. Other fixed costs can include delivery, removal and trim. No taxes, discounts or financing charges are added automatically. Currency switching changes the display symbol only, not the numbers.
Formula
net area = measured area − excluded area
required area = net area × (1 + waste percent / 100)
boxes = round up(required area ÷ coverage per box)
material cost = boxes × box price, or purchased area × price per area
total cost = material cost + net area × labor rate + other costs
Examples
A room with a box surplus
A 12 × 15 ft room has 180 ft². With 10% waste, it needs 198 ft². At 20 ft² per box, buy 10 boxes covering 200 ft². At 3.50 per ft², material cost is 700 in the selected currency.
Adding installation costs
For the same room, labor at 2 per ft² is 360. Adding fixed costs of 50 gives 1,110 total. Labor uses 180 ft², while material cost uses the purchased 200 ft².
Precision and definitions
Calculations retain unrounded values internally. Displayed digits do not increase the accuracy of measurements. NIST unit definitions provide the conversion reference.
